Description

As a major symbol of Kastamonu, the castle stands like crown of the city from its highest point. Located atop a main rock to the west of the city, the castle was built by the Komnenos in the 12th century. Only the interior of the castle survives today. The external walls of the castle were destroyed in late 18th century. The modifications introduced at various times in history earned the castle characteristics of Turkish architecture rather than those of a Medieval Byzantine structure. Nearly 120 meters above the city and in easy access to it, the castle offers the best spot for a panoramic view of Kastamonu. On the premises are cisterns, dungeons and escape tunnels as well as a mausoleum that's known as "Sultan with a Flag". This photo taken on 9 September 2020.
